Aao Ttaan Khoo School
by Marine Delmas
I have been in France for 2 weeks now. However, I cannot forget my wonderful experience lived in Trad Province in the South East of Tha๏land.
I spent 20 days as a volunteer in Aao Ttaan Khoo School with three nice teachers, Chalao, Malin and Kristana and the kindest director Premurn. I slept most of the nights in Chalao’s house, 5 minutes
by motorcycle far from the school and the sea and 2 nights in Kristana’s house, closer to Trad.
In the school, I taught especially to children at the level 4, 5 and 6 (10/11 and 12 year old).
To make them remember and learn faster I made them guess every word. They had to give to me the good alphabet letters to find the good word.
Moreover, the teachers spoke in Thai and the children had to translate in English, and vice versa I spoke in English and they translate in Thai to be sure that they understand well what I said and wrote.
The first day I taught to every child in the school about:
-Presentation
What is your name? Nice to meet you.
How old are you?
Marine Where are you from?
Where do you live?
-Colours
-Numbers
-Objects in classroom
-Body and body song
The second day, I taught to the youngest children about:
-Presentation
-Colours
-Numbers
-Body and body song
I taught to the top-level children about:
-Positions: on, under, between, next to, in, in front of
Where is the book? The book is…
-Direction: turn right, turn left, go straight
-Town: market, school, cinema, pier, cinema…
The 3rd day, I taught to the youngest children about:
- Description: tall/short, thin/fat…
- Feelings: happy, sad, hungry, tired, sick…
- Activities: watch TV, play football, …
The 4th day, every body in the school:
-feelings and questions
-description people and children + questions
-Activities and questions “Do you like …?”
-Song “twinkle twinkle”
-jobs and questions about their parents
The 5th day
- In the market: How much is it? Do you have …?
- House’s vocabulary, rooms and objects
- Song “My Bonnie”
6th day
- Sentence structure: N+V+Object, same for question
- Questions’ words: where, who, when, how long, how far, how old… and examples
7th day
- Pronouns: I, you, …
- Possessives: my, your, …
- Adjectives about time: always, often, sometimes, never…Today, tomorrow, yesterday, now, morning, afternoon, evening…
The director wanted to introduce me to the other directors in a meeting planned in the afternoon. So I went to visit Baang Gradan School, the biggest one with 230 children, and spoke with every teacher and director present there.
There I decided to teach for almost 2 hours 30 children (level 7) about basic vocabulary
- Presentation
- Because I knew they like singing, I asked them to sing the national Thai anthem after I sang the French one!
- Day, month, date
- Position
- Feelings
- Body
- Objects in the room and in the school
- 2 songs: body song and “My Bonnie”
The second week I taught to 80 children, who came in our school to learn English with me!!!
For 2 hours, I taught them about :
- Presentation (age, name, nationality, address…)
- Position
- Feelings
- Body + body song
- Objects in the room and in the school
- Description: tall/short, thin/fat…
- House’s vocabulary, rooms and objects
For the second week in the school we used to play games all together outside : singing, playing with the ball, playing with the chairs, listening Western music…!!
Children found exciting to listen Western music and they danced all the time in the classroom on the sound of Madonna, Shakira and other international singers less known in Thailand.
As regards the smallest children in the primary school, I taught them only the body song, numbers, days and I was very surprised about their level thanks to Chalao who like English and enjoy teaching it to her kids.
