Eco-tourism Project in Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary by David Balls In the heart of rural north eastern Thailand lies Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary, slowly attracting more visitors who come to see wild elephants in their natural habitat. Located 170 kms from Nong Khai City,
the sanctuary and the local village of Kham Pia have sensitively developed an ecotourism project that combines traditional “homestay accommodation” with the unique opportunity to view wild elephants. Over the past twenty years the number of Ecotourists has increased annually, and the development of this new project looks set to capture the interest of a large number of visitors keen to both contribute to sustainable tourism and experience the genuine jai dee of rural Thailand.

The journey east from Nong Khai takes you along the route of the majestic Mekhong river. On the left, beyond the fisherman waiting in anticipation for a good days catch, the mountains of Laos sit peacefully, providing an air of mystery and enchantment to the journey. Much of the land alongside the road is filled with rice paddies, and depending on the season, provide a fascinating insight into the production process of a product that feeds millions daily. As the road takes you deeper into the heart of rural Isan and through the villages surrounding the sanctuary, a feeling of excitement develops and the desire to explore the rich and tranquil offerings of the area.
