Story of Ko Krang, Krabi
Ko Krang, Krabi, In April 2006 I spent one month volunteering on the small Muslim island of Kor Krang, Krabi province. As I took the ten minute long tail boat ride from Krabi Town to the island for the first time I had no idea what to expect. Slightly nervous but also excited I reached the island and immediately
thought it was a really lovely place. So different from the hustle and bustle of Krabi Town, Kor Krang is peaceful and relaxed. In fact the quiet is only interrupted by the numerous motorbikes the locals use to speed around the island!

I and another volunteer, Gemma, stayed with the leaders of the village Su and Chad and their family. They are both really lovely and always kindly told us to do as the Thais do and ‘Take it easy!’ A highlight of the homestay is the fact that Su and Chad’s house is really the centre of the village community. There are always children and teenagers around the house, and you’d be sure to encounter Chad’s beautiful baby niece Sorieda daily. She is frequently carried around by the teenagers of the village and admired and loved by all! Everyone is also welcome to join in the volleyball games that take place every evening before sunset. They always end up in lots of laughs and the locals find ‘farang’ attempts at volleyball very amusing! As for my volunteer work, Gemma and I ran an English school holidays club for the local children. It was fun, challenging and interesting. The levels of English of the children differed considerably. However, we soon found ourselves discovering games and songs that all the children could enjoy and learn from. Pairs (Memory Card Game), Bingo and a mad fast vocab game involving running to the board were amongst the favourites. Thai children just love to play and team games were a big hit. As well as being competitive the children were great sports, which was fantastic to see. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Kor Krang. I got to experience Thai family life in beautiful surroundings. There are many things I will never forget, and I’m sure I will never see six buffalo roaming past the window as I eat breakfast again. Only in Kor Krang!
