Volunteer Getaway – Sangkhom
by Michael Schleidt
After a week of lesson preparation and teaching it’s quite nice to refresh your mind and explore the surroundings of your placement location. No matter if you want to hop on a local bus, hire a bike or a motorbike there is plenty of stuff to do and to see. So definitely make use of this opportunity while you are in Thailand! I decided to go for a motorbike ride west from Nongkhai along the Mekong River all the way to Sangkhom.

An early start definitely pays off – it’s great to watch people starting their daily routines and the monks going on their alms rounds and on top of that you can benefit from cooler temperatures in the morning.

On the way there are beautiful temples surrounded by fantastic gardens. I wouldn’t even know the name of some of them – I just stopped at places I liked. Definitely have a look at Wat Hin Maak Peng and enjoy its great location by the river.
Some more highlights are the waterfalls Nam Tok Than Thong and Than Tip. Than Thong did not have much water when I went in mid November but it was good fun to relax at its sandy beach by the Mekong and to have a shower in one of its pools. Than Tip is more spectacular because the waterfall is much higher. There is some good scrambling on the side to get to the top.
Another great place is a temple on a hilltop near Sangkhom. The Lonely Planet guide book calls it Wat Aranyabanphot but my guest house owner did not agree with this name. Anyway, it’s a great place to watch the sunrise, the sunset or just to come up any time of the day to enjoy the great views over the Mekong.
Sangkhom itself is a very laid back place. I recommend the Bouy Guesthouse just off the 211 road. You get a little hut with your own hammock on your balcony next to the river. The food is good, the beer tastes nice and the sunrise was a blast – what else can you ask for?
